Computer worms are one of the most destructive kinds of malicious code out there. Most people, however, don't understand what they are and how destructive they can actually be.

What is a Worm?

Worms are a form of a computer virus. They are harder to detect and control than that of a virus because they are self sustaining. Worms do not need a host and can spread on their own, without any action from the computer user.

Worm Characteristics

• They spread on their own without any action from the computer user
• They typically do not infect or corrupt files on their own
• Typically they harm networks and internet connections, slowing or completely halting network and computer performance and shutting down communications
• They typically do not attach to other files or programs; instead worms rely on themselves
• Worms containing viruses can delete or corrupt files - worms that contain such code are usually said to have a 'payload'
• They typically exploit vulnerabilities in a users' computer operating system

How to Protect Yourself

Most worms are considered malware no matter their purpose or intent. Because of this, most anti-virus and anti-spyware programs can help in removing the threat.

You should know, however, that because worms are self sustaining it's important to remove the entire worm code from your computer. Some anti-virus and anti-spyware programs do this better than others.

My Recommendation

Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are not created equal. Some perform better than others; while some don't work at all - they're merely a cover for spyware code.
